A Little "Swagger"
Goes a Long Way
By Beverly Smirnis
Winning the Greater Fort Worth Builders Association's
Builder of the Year award and being elected as its 2006
president are no small accomplishments. Both honors
require longevity and consistent industry leadership.
Randall Garrett has worked as a small volume custom home builder for over 23 years,
and has been a member of the GFWBA since 1992. Prior to that, as a lumber salesman in the
1970s and 1980s he was also active in the industry, attending local association meetings and
events. In addition, Randall has served on the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) board and
is a member of the Certified Master Builder Corporation. He counts the time and energy he
invests in these positions as essential to protecting the interests of his industry.
All of us are concerned with housing in some form or another. You are either the builder of homes, developer of lots for homes,
sell components or services for homes, or support one those categories. The GFWBA is the 'mother ship' for facilitating oneness
among membership. That is what we do. We directly help your career because we provide education to make you better at what you do.
We provide events to allow you a networking venue, and keep an eye on the regulatory system for you. As you know, the fastest growing
line-item costs are caused due to regulatory measures. We will go 'head up' with anyone that threatens housing, the source of your living,"
said Randall.
"The more of us that band together, the stronger we become-like strands in a cable. The Golden Gate Bridge is supported simply by large
cables made up of smaller strands of steel. We must increase our numbers (strands) to support the Association and the industry
we work in, " he added.
That said, Randall has a single objective for his year as president for GFWBA to reach 1,000 members. If this objective is
accomplished, all of the association's usual annual objectives and goals will be accomplished as well, he explained.
Randall recounted a favorite story of his to illustrate a key point. "Jimmy Johnson had won a national championship at the
University of Miami in football and two Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys. A reporter was interviewing Jimmy and
discussing his secrets of success. The report alluded to the image of some of his players, both in college and the NFL.
The reporter commented that his players were haughty, arrogant, and had an overall high opinion of themselves. Jimmy, without
hesitation, answered, 'I like my players to have a little "swagger" to 'em.' That illustrates my objective. We, at the Greater
Fort Worth Builders Association, have to get our 'swagger' back."
While leading the helm at GFWBA, Randall will also continue to inspire "swagger" in his own team at his job sites. Randall
Garrett Homes is well known for its accomplishments as a builder/remodeler of fine custom homes and has established a
niche in building garden homes for empty nesters. But that's not all Randall does -
about 10 percent of his business is commercial and has included office finish-out and construction of retail centers and
even an automobile dealership. He has also begun to develop some of his own neighborhoods.
Flexible in the type of projects he undertakes as well as the geographic location he is willing to work in, Randall
has a proven track record of building for both cost-focused families and businesses as well as affluent customers
desiring inordinately complex estates. He is active in Northeast Tarrant County, Arlington/Mansfield and is currently
working on his first project in Granbury.
Whatever the project entails, Randall always upholds the adage, "The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After the
Sweetness of Low Price Is Forgotten. "
"The key ingredient to success as a builder is integrity, " said Randall. "Our word is our bond. It's that simple. My
company is in the business of creating valuable living and business homes through experience, expertise and compassion for
those we serve.
